The Adafruit Capacitive Touch HAT for Raspberry Pi is a versatile and creative expansion board designed to add touch-based interaction to your Raspberry Pi. Powered by the MPR121 capacitive touch sensor, this HAT gives you access to 12 individual capacitive touch channels, making it ideal for building custom controllers, interactive installations, educational projects, musical interfaces, and experimental electronics.
Capacitive touch sensing works by detecting when a person or animal touches one of the connected sensor electrodes. This makes it possible to turn everyday conductive objects into touch controls. The board features 12 convenient “figure-8” connection holes that work especially well with alligator clips, so you can quickly connect the HAT to metal objects, containers of water, fruit, vegetables, or other conductive materials. For more permanent installations, advanced users can also solder directly to the pads.
This HAT is compatible with any Raspberry Pi that has a 2×20 connector, making it suitable for many modern Raspberry Pi boards. It comes with the Capacitive Touch HAT and a 2×20 socket header, but requires a small amount of through-hole soldering for assembly. Adafruit also provides software examples and guides for Python usage, including projects for touch detection, keyboard-style input, and audio-triggered interaction.
