Adafruit I2S 3W Stereo Speaker Bonnet for Raspberry Pi – Mini Kit
The Adafruit I2S 3W Stereo Speaker Bonnet for Raspberry Pi is a simple and practical way to add high-quality stereo audio to your Raspberry Pi. It is the same size as a Raspberry Pi Zero, but it works with any Raspberry Pi that has a 2×20 connector, including the A+, B+, Zero, Pi 2, Pi 3, and Pi 4. In addition, Adafruit notes that it has been tested with both Raspberry Pi OS and RetroPie.
This bonnet uses the I2S digital audio standard. As a result, the sound is cleaner than typical headphone jack output and avoids the static often heard with analog audio. It supports 4Ω to 8Ω speakers with up to 3 watts of output, which makes it a strong option for compact speaker projects, portable music systems, and gaming builds.
Setup is designed to be easy. You can plug in a compatible enclosed speaker set through the JST jack in the center, or you can use the included terminal blocks to connect your own speakers. Adafruit says the PCB is fully tested and assembled, and the newer revision now comes with the terminal blocks pre-soldered. Therefore, many users can get started with very little assembly work.
The board also includes useful updates for advanced users. For example, Adafruit added breakout pads to make configuration and muting easier, and the bonnet already includes the 2×20 female header soldered on. However, a strong 5V power supply is recommended, especially when using 3W 4Ω speakers for louder output.
Because of its small size, simple installation, and clear stereo output, this bonnet is a smart choice for makers, hobbyists, and educators. It measures about 65.0mm x 30.0mm x 7.2mm and weighs around 7.4g, so it fits easily into compact Raspberry Pi builds without adding much bulk. Please note that the Raspberry Pi and speakers are not included.
